BorderTally Pro is for small importers, ecommerce sellers, and sourcing teams who need a CSV landed-cost pass before quoting or ordering. Treat the result as a planning estimate and confirm exact tariff codes before making shipment decisions.

How the Canadian threshold works

CAD 20 baseline; qualifying US/Mexico courier shipments: duty CAD 150 / tax CAD 40. Concretely, postal shipments from every country and courier shipments from outside the United States or Mexico use the CAD 20 duty-and-tax threshold. A courier shipment from the United States or Mexico can use the higher CAD 150 duty threshold and CAD 40 tax threshold only when the goods entered the commerce of that country before shipment to Canada; simple transshipment does not qualify. This estimate does not model gifts, excise goods, business imports, or customs reliefs.

What still needs precision

Category rates are deliberately broad and flagged for review. Each should be narrowed with representative commodity or tariff codes and an official source before relying on it for a real shipment.

Estimated Canadian duty rates by category

Category What the bucket covers Estimated duty
Clothing Representative apparel bucket. Canadian apparel MFN duty is often high (commonly around 16 to 18 percent) but varies by fabric and tariff item, and CUSMA-origin goods may be duty-free. Verify the tariff item. 18%
Footwear Representative footwear bucket. Canadian footwear duty varies materially by construction and material. Verify the tariff item. 16%
Electronics Many consumer electronics enter Canada duty-free, but GST and any provincial tax still apply. Verify the tariff item. 0%
Toys Many toys enter Canada duty-free, but GST/PST and safety rules may apply. Verify the tariff item. 0%
Home goods Broad household-goods placeholder. Rates vary by material and tariff item; use a precise code for production estimates. 6.5%
Other / not sure Conservative fallback estimate when a category has not been mapped to a tariff item yet. 5%

On top of duty, Canada applies GST (federal) at 5% on the customs value plus duty, and carriers may add a handling fee. These are broad planning buckets — verify the exact commodity code before relying on a rate.

What does this Canadian calculator include?

It estimates item price, shipping, insurance, simplified customs duty, GST (federal), a carrier handling fee, and the total landed cost. It excludes excise goods such as alcohol and tobacco.

Is this a customs classification tool?

No. It uses simplified category buckets, so final charges depend on the exact commodity or tariff code, origin, reliefs, and the carrier's clearance process.

When do the higher Canadian courier thresholds apply?

postal shipments from every country and courier shipments from outside the United States or Mexico use the CAD 20 duty-and-tax threshold. A courier shipment from the United States or Mexico can use the higher CAD 150 duty threshold and CAD 40 tax threshold only when the goods entered the commerce of that country before shipment to Canada; simple transshipment does not qualify.

Estimate only. This calculator does not provide customs, legal, or tax advice. Final charges are determined by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the parcel carrier. The numeric tax line includes federal GST only and excludes provincial PST/HST variations. The CAD 40/150 thresholds require a qualifying courier shipment from the United States or Mexico; postal shipments and other ship-from countries use the CAD 20 baseline in this model.
