INR 5,000 is not an ecommerce purchase threshold
CBIC Circular 4/2020 addresses the restricted bona fide gift exemption. It says goods bought through ecommerce portals cannot seek customs clearance as gifts, while permitted gifts may enter only with full applicable duties except for narrow exceptions. Do not subtract INR 5,000 or treat a purchase below that amount as duty-free.
Build the official calculation from the tariff classification
Start with a detailed product description, country of origin, customs value, shipping, insurance, quantity, import purpose, and entry route. Then identify the exact Indian tariff classification and use the ICEGATE Customs Duty Calculator to check current BCD, SWS, IGST, cess, exemptions, and notification treatment. A broad category percentage cannot safely replace those inputs.
Check product eligibility before price
Some products need approvals or must satisfy restrictions before the landed cost matters. For toys, the Government of India says the Toys Quality Control Order makes BIS certification compulsory for covered domestic and foreign manufacturers; verify the applicable safety standard, licence, marking, and whether the item is a finished toy or a part before shipment.
Use the actual clearance quote
India does not publish one nationwide private courier or broker fee for every parcel. Postal, courier, storage, disbursement, documentation, and broker charges depend on the shipment and provider. BorderTally therefore disables its former unsourced fee placeholders and requires the actual assessed charge or a written quote.
Inputs required before quoting
Import purpose and entry route, including whether the parcel is a purchase, a permitted gift, or another personal-use import; Exact 8- or 10-digit Indian tariff classification with a detailed product description and country of origin; Customs value, shipping, insurance, quantity, and arrival date; Current BCD, SWS, IGST, cess, exemption, and trade-agreement treatment checked in ICEGATE; Actual postal, courier, carrier, or customs-broker charge for this shipment; Product-specific approvals or restrictions; for toys, confirm BIS licensing, the applicable safety standard, and QCO scope before shipment.
Why the former fee presets are disabled
India does not publish one nationwide private postal, courier, carrier, or broker amount for every parcel. BorderTally removed the unsupported INR 100 and INR 600 placeholders; use the actual assessment or a written shipment-specific quote.
