Which VAT rates does France have?

France applies standard rate 20%, intermediate rate 10%, reduced rate 5.5%, super-reduced rate 2.1%, plus a zero / exempt category for qualifying supplies. Pick the rate that matches your goods or service; confirm the category with the official source.

Can tourists get a VAT refund in France (détaxe)?

Yes. Visitors who are resident outside the EU and aged 16+ can reclaim TVA on personal purchases of more than €100 (incl. tax) made in the same store within three months, using the détaxe process: ask the retailer for a tax-free form, then validate it at a PABLO kiosk or customs desk when leaving the EU. After operator fees the refund typically works out to roughly 10-13% of the price paid, not the full 20%.

How much is French VAT on restaurants and food?

Restaurant and café meals are charged at the 10% intermediate rate, most everyday groceries at the 5.5% reduced rate, and alcoholic drinks at the standard 20% — which is why a supermarket receipt can mix several TVA lines. Use the rate picker above to add or remove the rate that matches your item.

Does France have sales tax?

No — France uses VAT (TVA), not a US-style sales tax. The key practical difference: French shelf prices already include TVA, so the price you see is the price you pay, whereas US sales tax is added at the till. To find the tax inside a French price, use 'Remove tax' above.

Estimate only. Not tax advice. French TVA rates and the goods or services each applies to are set by French law and the EU VAT framework; confirm the correct rate for your transaction. Rates as of 2026-06.
